Direct response landing pages - creation examples and insight to making money online

Not all products and services are created equal.  Not all landing pages are created equal.  Thus, conversion rates for similar products and similar landing pages convert at different percentages.  The higher your landing page conversion ratio – the easier it makes your job of advertising your offer on a mass scaleMass marketing through the internet is the ultimate goal of every online marketer.  In order to mass market a product through the internet it takes a landing page that converts at 3%+ and the ability to generate massive amounts of traffic.

The following are some suggestions and tips when it comes to creating a landing page that converts:

Start using online web commercial videosLanding pages that are not using video are losing a large % of sales to competitors that are.  There are two types of online marketing videos that Banner Blindness prefers to use.  The first type of video that we use is a spokesperson that generally appears in the lower right hand corner of the landing page.  Shooting this video can be difficult as it has to be done against a white screen and it’s a rather complicated flash file.  However, this video format offers a lot of credibility, counter arguments that the customer might have, as well a strong call to action to the customer.  The second video type that we like to use is a simple spokesperson overlaying a blue screen.  On the blue screen we overlay a corresponding background image.  We generally host this second video format on Youtube as it gives the website a social network aspect and possibly more credibility as Youtube is a well recognized brand.

Start using online web testimonials.  Testimonials should be from real customers with real stories to tell how the product or service has changed their lives.  Big smiles, big stories, and a call to action from the testimonial participant work best.  Using a picture of a testimonial participant doesn’t work anymore – you need to video your testimonial participants.

Test Test Test.  Far too many graphic designers and project managers fail to test their landing pages and don’t perform website usability testing.  Testing involves going through the sales process and looking for ways to optimize your website.  There are countless variables that can affect your conversion rate.  Focus most of your attention on your initial page and customer ordering process page.  In online direct response marketing I rarely see more than 2 – 4 pages in the sales process.  Again, if your looking to learn more about landing page optimization you should look at offers on affiliate networks like Copeac, Hydra, Azoogle, Crisp Ads Affiliate Network, Affiliate.com, etc….

Credibility.  There are lots of little tricks you can implement on your landing page to achieve credibility with your customer.  Testimonials are by far the most important aspect in achieving credibility.  Even though you might not take sales over the phone be sure to have a toll free number with a pre-recorded sales message on it.  List your mailing address so the customer knows your not a fly-by night company or looking for a quick sale.  The Wu-Yi weight loss offer is a great example of establishing credibility.  They use a Chinese male spokesman that immediately tells the customer the companies telephone number, mailing address, and information about the company.

Landing page optimization - Testimonials make a huge impact

Why aren’t you using testimonials in your online business?  You need to get customer pictures, videos, and comments from your customers to place on your website or landing page.  Not having testimonials is costing you thousands of dollars and loads of potential customers.  Many businesses just advertise testimonials - and they have found that to be the best way to market their product or service.  Below is a photo of Angie’s List and how they use testimonials to increase their subscriber base:

When using testimonials:

  • Don’t be afraid to use them.  Make the pictures or videos of your clients large and enthusiastic for your website.
  • You should have at least 5 testimonials, and more depending on what it is you are selling.
  • Photos of people giving testimonials should be taken by yourself using an 8 MP digital camera.
  • Watermark your testimonials videos before uploading to Youtube.  You can use Windows Movie magic to do this - just choose “subtitle” when playing with the text options.
  • You can use testimonials to your advantage.  Guide your clients answers by asking leading questions.  In the example below they show a client empowering themselves and it describes why Angie’s List is good.
  • Testimonials will increase your sales - if you don’t already use them you are losing out on a lot of additional revenue.
  • On your website you can solicit clients to submit testimonials to you, you don’t even have to gather them.
