Search Engine Optimization Black Hat Methods

I recently interviewed a bright, enthusiastic, and determined young man for a position we are trying to fill at Banner Blindness.  After going over the office rules, standards, and tasks; as well as going over the various online marketing and web development services we provide - he asked, “Do you do blackhat SEO?”  I was surprised to hear someone who has never worked in online marketing ask this.  Banner Blindness does not practice black hat SEO because traditional white hat SEO is difficult and profitable enough as is.

Search Engine Optimization is not easy: it takes patience, planning, manual labor, research, intelligence, and a “system”.

Patience

Search Engine Optimization does not happen over night.  Search Engine Optimization is a battle that can go on for years; if not forever.  Online media producers are always creating better content that supercedes pre-existing content for valuable keywords.  It can take 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and even longer to see results for highly competitice keywords.  Without patience and confidence in Google - you will never master your keyword set.

Planning

Search Engine Optimization is very similar to a writing out and executing a battle plan.  Google’s database is a real time battle ground with marketers around the world constantly trying to dislodge and defeat their keyword enemies.  IF you rank for the word, “hammers” and you happen to sell hammers - you can generate hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in revenue.  Anyone can go about finding hammers at wholesale prices; and if you rank # 1-4 google, sick money.  When planning your next Search Engine Optimization marketing campaign, consider: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How.  You need to know EXACTLY what keywords your trying to rank for, you need to know who your competitors (enemy are), where your enemies are at, how strong they are (number of incoming links), what is their level of moral (if they see a threat coming are they going to be able to sucessfully deter your SEO attack).  After carrying out your next SEO attack; do a weekly or monthly AAR (After Action Review) and discuss the negatives, positives, and outcome of your SEO attack.

Start using online web commercial videosLanding pages that are not using video are losing a large % of sales to competitors that are.  There are two types of online marketing videos that Banner Blindness prefers to use.  The first type of video that we use is a spokesperson that generally appears in the lower right hand corner of the landing page.  Shooting this video can be difficult as it has to be done against a white screen and it’s a rather complicated flash file.  However, this video format offers a lot of credibility, counter arguments that the customer might have, as well a strong call to action to the customer.  The second video type that we like to use is a simple spokesperson overlaying a blue screen.  On the blue screen we overlay a corresponding background image.  We generally host this second video format on Youtube as it gives the website a social network aspect and possibly more credibility as Youtube is a well recognized brand.

Start using online web testimonials.  Testimonials should be from real customers with real stories to tell how the product or service has changed their lives.  Big smiles, big stories, and a call to action from the testimonial participant work best.  Using a picture of a testimonial participant doesn’t work anymore – you need to video your testimonial participants.
